Hasbro's Future With The Star Wars License Still Unknown, But Don't Panic

Jay Cochran - February 11, 2020
Hasbro today held their Q4 2019 Earnings Conference Call where CEO Brian Goldner spoke to members of the financial media. During the event there was no mention of whether Hasbro had renewed their licenses with Disney for either Star Wars or Marvel. For those not familiar, the current licenses will expire at the end of this year. While Goldner would not commit to any future plans beyond this year for those brands, or their continued releationship with Disney, he did say he remained positive on the prospects of them continuing to work together.

While one would expect some kind of official announcement to come soon from either Disney or Hasbro on the future of the Star Wars and Marvel licenses, it's not terribly surprising that it did not come today. Hasbro will be holding a full Year 2019 Earnings Conference Call and Annual Investor Update at the New York Toy Fair on February 21, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. Eastern Time. If there is no announcement at that point about continuing on with these licenses, then fans might want to start panicking.

You make a good point, plus let's not forget that Disney releasing Star Wars films yearly didn't really help Hasbro move a lot of product.

Allowing them breathing room to focus on iconic and fan favorite characters (and the occasional obscure one), like with Marvel Legends, instead of make this guy and that guy and that guy and this guy and that guy from this new movie that will piss off half the fans will probably help the action figure lines do better on the shelves.

I doubt it will happen but if one of the two licenses left Hasbro, my money would be on the SW one. Star Wars has seemingly been in a rut in recent years. 3.75" stuff that people like has become two expensive to really be able to do and expect it to sell well. Hasbro has made so much SW stuff already and the license has to be terribly expensive. Again I doubt it will happen but I don't see the SW license as golden as it once was.

It would suck if it happened, I doubt any other company could handle the Star Wars and Marvel licenses better than Hasbro. I doubt that Hasbro will lose the license, I guess we'll find out in Toyfair.

Disney has done some questionable stuff when it comes to their handling of the Star Wars license, but it would be downright crazy to sever ties with Hasbro.

Hasbro has done fantastic work with both the Star Wars and Marvel licenses. I think most people would agree that Marvel Legends and the Star Wars Black series are about as good as it gets in that field.

If this happens I'm glad I have pretty much all the Star Wars/Marvel figures I want. Besides if Mattel takes over the licenses the value of the current Marvel Legends and SW Black figures will go through the roof....lol.
